Choosing Enjoyable and Enriching Gifts

With the holiday season in full swing, determining what to give to a gifted learner can be tricky. Gifted kids often become bored quickly by toys targeted to their age group. If you want the presents you give to be fun but still stimulating, here are some ideas to help you brainstorm.

Games

A gifted learner will enjoy the challenge of a 3-D wooden puzzle. Just trying to take one apart, let alone put it back together again, is quite the quandary. These puzzles build problem solving skills and spatial reasoning skills. The possibilities do not end with puzzles, however. Many classic board games, such as chess, require strategic thinking and planning skills. Some educational video games even build math or reading skills and increase processing speeds. There are many options and types of games, so you are sure to be able to find one your child will love.

Creativity

Spending time being creative is one way kids can have fun while still engaging their minds. The ability to think creatively is what helps children grow up to become innovators and leaders. When children receive gifts such as modeling clay, paint sets, or instruments, they also receive the freedom to develop new ideas and exercise their creativity.

Books

Of course, one of the best gifts you can give is a good book. A firm grasp of the use of language is an irreplaceable asset, and reading is an excellent way to augment this ability. To ensure you are giving your child an exceptional story to read, look for books that have won children’s literature awards. These books often contain educational content, so children can absorb new information even while they are relaxing.

No matter what presents you give, remember that the point of giving a gift is to make the recipient smile. Finding the right gift is a challenge, but it is well worth the hours of joy it will bring to your child.
